Learn everything you need to start observing the night sky! Bring your own telescope for this interactive workshop with experienced astronomers.

Our Beginner Telescope Workshop is the perfect hands-on session for beginners or those looking to refresh their skills.We’ll assist you in assembling your equipment, review the basics of observational astronomy, and practice locating targets in your telescope.
This event is rain or shine. If it is raining, we will meet in the Muddy Run Visitor Center, adjacent to the observatory.
Requirements
Bring your own telescope. Feel free to bring friends or family who would like to learn alongside you!
Best for ages 13+. While families are welcome, this workshop is designed for participants who will be hands-on with equipment. We recommend leaving younger children at home or enjoying the park with another trusted adult unless they are ready to actively engage.
Price. Pay what you want! At the end of the workshop, you will have the opportunity to make a donation to our non-profit in whatever amount you feel comfortable with.We highly encourage you to explore our membership opportunities! Your donation supports our mission to provide fun and educational astronomy programs.

Telescope Hardware: Review telescope parts and learn how to set up the tripod/base and mount the telescope.
Optics: Understand aperture, focal length, and eyepieces and their impact on observation.
Telescope Operation: Practice scope movement, adjusting and achieving focus, utilizing finder tools, and changing magnification.
Guided Practice: Work together andpractice locating targets with your telescope.
Navigating the Night Sky: Get introduced to star maps and apps, and review the basics of the night sky.
Star Hopping & Target Tracking: Learn star-hopping techniques to assist in finding deep sky objects.
Seasonal Night Sky Targets: Receive a worksheet with seasonal night sky targets for observation with detailed instructions to help you find them.
